ESC VB Volleyball Results
TASIS entered the 2019 ESC Championship in Berlin on Friday with high hopes of winning their third straight ESC title. The tournament featured strong competition from 8 teams, including Berlin Brandenburg International School (2 teams), International School of Lausanne, International School of Zug and Luzern, American School of Milan, St. Julian’s School, and Carlucci American International School of Lisbon.
The Tigers got off to a great start by winning their pool on Friday with three straight wins, sweeping ISZL, ASM, and BBIS all in two sets.
On Saturday, TASIS faced eventual tournament champions, St. Julians, in the semi-final. The match started off well for the Tigers with a hard-fought win in the first set, 26-24. It looked like the Tigers might sweep this match in two sets as well, but St. Julian’s came back strong with a string of serving runs to bury the Tigers 10-25, delivering them their worst set result of the season. In the decisive third set, TASIS hung on as long as they could, but continued to struggle on serve-receive and eventually lost the match 17-25.
TASIS would face familiar foe ASM in their last match of the day to decide third place. Hoping to avenge their loss in the NISSA championships, the Tigers got off to a strong start with a 10-4 lead. However, strong serving from ASM brought them back in to the game, and they managed to chip away at TASIS’ lead and eventually take the first set 21-25. Under pressure and facing a barrage of strong serves and spikes from an energized ASM team, TASIS collapsed in the second set to lose the match 0-2 and place 4th in the field.
Despite the frustrating loss, the Tigers displayed impressive spikes and digs throughout the tournament, and some of the best blocks of any team in the tournament. TASIS was lead by Co-Captain Outside Hitter Ivan Linnikov ‘22 (26 Kills, 3 Blocks, 6 Aces, 5 Digs), Middle Zhan Sarsenov ‘21 (13 Kills, 15 Blocks, 4 Aces, 10 Digs), Co-Captain Setter Maxim Minkov '21 (10 Kills, 1 Block, 4 Aces, 4 Digs), and Outside Hitter Ivan Kozhuhar '21 (13 Kills, 6 Aces, 6 Digs).
Additionally, Ivan Linnikov was named to the ESC All-Star Team and received one nomination for Most Valuable Player.
