A Very Generous Act
Many thanks to Renato Kurmanaev Chernov, grade 5, who very kindly donated CHF 180 to the Nuovo Fiore Ethiopia GSP group, which is in the midst of its fundraising week. Half of that was earned as an assistant coach as part of his tennis club, and half of it was his personal pocket money. When asked why he wanted to donate so much money, Renato said:
“Because we have to treat everyone equally. We need to treat Ethiopian children the same way we treat TASIS children. I really like a quote by Ryunosuke Satoro that made me think of this: ‘One person, one drop. If everyone does it together, it can be a whole ocean.’ I want my donation to raise awareness and help.”
The Nuovo Fiore Ethiopia group is also pleased to announce that yesterday’s Pajama Day raised just over CHF 1000, which will make a huge difference to the school TASIS students work with in Addis Ababa each year. Thank you to everyone who participated!
Team TASIS Advances to Swiss Football Association National Championship!
Hearty congratulations are due to Coach Eric Nowak and the 11 fourth-graders who represented Team TASIS at the Credit Suisse Kids Cup Qualifying Tournament in Rivera on Thursday, May 9. The TASIS contingent won three of its four matches—outscoring opponents 12 to 2 in the process—and will now proudly represent the Canton of Ticino at the National Championship Finals of the Swiss Football Association in Basel on June 12!
The performance was especially impressive in that the fourth graders were actually competing against older players for the entire tournament—something they weren’t aware of until afterward.
“Only after the tournament did I tell the kids that all the other teams they played in fact had been 5th-grade teams with much older players, so this was really a remarkable performance,” said Coach Nowak. “We received a lot of compliments from other coaches and the FTC organizers on how well our team played and what a great squad they are.”
Best of luck to Coach Nowak and Team TASIS—Lucas Airolo, Luca Amabile, Lavinia Cerra, Giancarlo Farina, Lennart Nowak, Timothy Ogilvie, Lucas Schwab, Ivan Stefano, Lucian Talamo, Matteo Vanossi, and Finn Withers—in Basel!
A Chance to Experience Boarding Life
The 2019 TASIS Summer Programs are nearly filled, but we still have room for a few more boarding students in the Château des Enfants (CDE) program during session one, which runs from June 22–July 18. Families with children between the ages of 7–10 who may be interested in seeing what a boarding experience is like are encouraged to apply at summer.tasis.com. All inquiries can be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
